It is not clear whether “May” Flynn was a victim of the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919. Her cause of death has not yet been discovered.
Mary Margaret Flynn, born on May 18, 1894 to Patrick Francis Flynn and Mary Agnes (McCarty) Flynn, was also known as “May.” In the 1900 U.S. Census, she is living with her parents, a younger brother, Francis, and a younger sister, Madalin. By 1910, her maternal grandfather, Thomas McCarty, is living with the family.
She graduated from Watertown High School in 1913 at the age of 19. Her classmates included: Lester Atwood, Mildred Atwood, Wilfred Barlow, Stanley Barnes, Harold Beers (who died of the Influenza Pandemic in Feb. 1919), Annie Bormolini, Ethel Cashman, Marion Cooper, Evelyn Dauch, Herbert Dayton, Mary Farrell, Josephine Keilty, Vinton Mitchel, Harry Norton, Harold Seymour.
The following obituary was published in the Waterbury Republican Newspaper on October 24, 1918, p. 9:
“Watertown, Oct 23: The funeral of Miss Mary M. Flynn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick F. Flynn of Porter street, was held at St. John’s church Tuesday morning. Mass was celebrated by Rev. J.J. Loftus. The bearers were Harold E. Bassford, Wilfred Barlow, Stanley Barnes and Herbert Dayton, high school classmates, Sylvester Farrell and M.W. Barrett. Burial was in Mount St. James’s cemetery.”
A memorial on the Find-A-Grave database has an image of her headstone, and is available there.
